やる means 'to do' only as a physical action. So while its okay to say やる for doing a game, you can't use it with mental processes since they don't involve any physical movement.
やる can also be used as a way to give things or do something for somebody while looking down at that person.する does not have this property.
Example:
お前にこれをやるよ。I give you this. (looking down)
ぜったいに勝ってやる！I'll win (beat you) for sure!
